How to Check Your Tyres

Why do I need to check my tyres?

To avoid road accidents, it’s vital that you check your tyres regularly. When the tyres on a vehicle become worn, grip is reduced and stopping distances increase; if wear becomes excessive and your tread depth doesn’t meet legal requirements, you risk the safety of yourself and others. What’s more, you could be faced with hefty fines of up to £2,500 (per tyre) and receive 3 penalty points on your license.

It is recommended that you replace your tyres before the legal limit is reached.

What is the legal tyre tread depth?

In the UK, the legal limit for your tyre tread depth is 1.6 millimetres across the central 3-quarters of the tread. The tread must meet this legal requirement around the complete circumference of the tyre.

How to check your tyre tread depth

To carry out a simple tyre check, you just need a 20 pence piece and a few spare minutes. It is recommended that you do the 20p test on your vehicle every couple of weeks, and especially before long journeys.

To check your tyres, follow the instructions below:

  • Look for the shallowest tread you can find.
  • Insert the 20p piece; if you can’t see the outer band of the coin, the tyre still has plenty of wear left in it. If the band is visible, you should change the tyre.
  • Check the tyre tread in several places, in case of any flat spots.
  • Repeat the process on all your tyres.
  • Whilst you’re there, check for any additional damage to your tyres to ensure that they’re absolutely safe; look out for any deep cuts in the tyres, or bulges in the sidewall.

If you’re unsure about your tread depth or the condition of your tyres, contact your nearest Toyota dealer. They will happily offer advice and assistance, and can also provide you with new tyres, should you need them.
